Delta Baseball Opens with Sweep
Defeats Union College, 2-0 and 9-2
Barbourville, Kentucky – The Delta College baseball team opened up the 2016 season with a sweep of the Union College JV team by the scores of 2-0 and 9-2. Collin Meacham threw five innings of shutout baseball giving up two hits while striking out six and walking three.
Derek Clyde led the game off with a double before scoring on a Brady Marwede single to give DC a 1-0 leading after one inning. Delta would add another run in the fifth inning as courtesy runner Tyler Kelsey scored on an error for the final margin.
Clyde led the offense with two hits while Tyler Robbins added two hits of his own to go along with two stolen bases.
Tyler Kirkwood took the mound in the nightcap to pick up the win surrendering just one infield hit while striking out three. Delta gave him early run support by putting up an eight-spot in the second inning courtesy of six hits and two Union errors. Jake Lesniak and Ethan Lesperance combined to give up just one earned run over the final two innings in relief of Kirkwood.
Robbins, Ty Jones and Jordan Jachens each had two hits in the game to lead the offense.
The Pioneers take on third ranked Frederick Community College on Saturday before playing ASA Brooklyn in the second game of the day. Cody Orban and Thomas Fortney are slated to start for Delta on the hill. Game time is 9am at Chain of Lakes park in Winter Haven, Florida.
