Winter Haven, Florida – The Delta College baseball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday, losing 14-4 to third ranked Frederick Community College and 10-6 to eighth ranked ASA Brooklyn. The losses even the Pioneer's record to 2-2 on the young season.
In game one, Frederick jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before a Dean Marais solo homerun closed the gap to 4-1 after two innings. Five unearned runs on back-to-back errors and three hits put Frederick up 9-1 and Delta never recovered. Cody Orban (0-1) took the loss on the mound while Jordan Jachens and Justin Jurek each had RBI doubles to lead the offense.
The defensive woes continued for Delta against ASA Brooklyn as two first inning errors allowed the Avengers to take a 4-0 lead. With the score 6-0 in the fourth, back-to-back doubles by Jurek and Watson Moore plated Delta's first run of the game. The Pioneers would cut the lead in half in the fifth as a Tyler Robbins single would plate Z Westley and an ASA error allowed Marias to cross the plate and make the score 6-3.
ASA answered the Delta threat with four runs in the sixth off of reliever Jake Gross before DC would push three runs across in the seventh for the final 10-6 tally. Thomas Fortney (0-1) took the loss despite surrendering just four hits and striking out four. Robbins finished the game with three hits, two RBI and a stolen base to lead the offense while Westley, Jurek and Ty Jones each added two hits apiece.
The spring trip doesn't get any easier for Delta as they take on #11 Lincoln Land Community College on Sunday in a noon double-header. The Loggers from Springfield, Illinois played in the NJCAA World Series in 2015 finishing in seventh place in the country. Matt Sahr is slated to start game one while Austin Dingee will be on the mound in game two for Delta.
