Delta Loses, 9-4
Five errors doom Pioneers
Midland, MI – The Delta men's baseball team took the field for the first time in 18 days on Wednesday, dropping a single nine-inning affair to the Northwood JV team, 9-4. The loss brings the Pioneer record to 8-7 on the season.
Northwood jumped on the scoreboard early, plating three unearned runs in the bottom of the first courtesy of four Delta errors. Delta tacked on a run in the top of the second before the Timberwolves took a commanding lead with four runs in the third and two in the fourth. The Pioneers finished the scoring with three runs in the sixth for the final score.
"It was what I expected, actually," said head coach Danny Smith. "We haven't been able to practice, indoors or out, since we got back from Florida, so we're rusty. " Delta committed five errors in the contest while picking up just three hits.
Matt Sahr was tagged with the loss, dropping his season record to 1-2. Six DC pitchers took the hill, giving up just three earned runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking seven.
Offensively, the Pioneers were led by Z Westley's three RBI double.
"Of course we always want to win every contest but it's better to get this poor performance out of the way tonight and hope we can turn it around by Friday."
Delta opens league play at Lansing Community College on Friday. Game time is 2pm at West Side Park.
