Saginaw Twp – The Delta baseball team was back in action after an 11 day hiatus, hosting the Monarchs of Macomb Community College on Wednesday and splitting a pair of games with the visitors. Delta would win game one, 9-2 before dropping the nightcap, 7-5. With the split, DC now has a 10-9 record overall on the season and stands at 2-2 in the MCCAA.
Colin Meacham started on the hill for Delta in game one and threw a complete game six-hitter while striking out three. Macomb took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning before Jordan Jachens launched a double to right center and scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1. A walk, two errors, and a two RBI squeeze bunt off the bat of Ty Robbins would make it 5-2 in favor of the hosts by the time the inning ended. The Pioneers would tack on four more in the sixth to win going away.
With the win, Meacham is now 2-0 on the year. Delta was led offensively by Derrek Clyde who drew four walks in four at-bats and Dean Marais with a single and a double. Jordan Jachens had two doubles and scored two runs while Robbins collected three RBI's. Defensively, the Pioneer committed zero errors.
Game two saw the Pioneers pick up where they left off offensively as they would go up 3-0 in the first inning courtesy of a Z Westley RBI double and a Dean Marais sacrifice fly. But Macomb would score seven runs in the fourth inning, five of them earned, and take a 7-3 lead.
Delta continued to chisel away at the lead, cutting it to 7-5 heading in to the final inning. That's when Tyler Robbins got things going with a single and Drew Harding drew a walk to put the game tying run on first. A missed bunt attempt and a double play ball would end the game, however.
Cody Orban suffered the loss for Delta to drop his season record to 2-2. Westley led the offense, picking up three hits in the losing effort. Robbins, Luke Schrage and Jordan Jachens also had two hits for Delta as the Pioneers outhit Macomb, 12-6.
DC next plays at Kalamazoo Valley on Saturday before hosting first place Jackson on Sunday. Both starting times are 1pm.
