Saginaw Twp – The Delta men's baseball team clobbered the visiting St Clair Community College club on Tuesday, defeating the Skipper 17-3 in game one before completing the sweep with a 7-2 win in the nightcap. With the wins, Delta improves to 14-13 overall on the season and evens its record to 5-5 within MCCAA play.
Game one saw Delta score five runs in the first inning, seven in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth to win via the mercy rule. Colin Meacham picked up the win on the mound, allowing one earned run while striking out six to improve his record to 3-0 on the year. Offensively, the Pioneers were led by Z Westley's big day at the plate that included going 4-for-4 with three doubles. Tyler Robbins also went 4-for-4 while scoring four runs while Ty Jones contributed with a single, a double, two runs and two RBI.
In all, Delta had 15 hits while drawing a total of nine free passes.
The offense continued to generate runs in game two as DC scored three in the first inning, two in the second and two in the third to take a 7-0 lead. St Clair would finally get on the board with two runs in the fourth but it was too little too late as starting pitcher Cody Orban had no problems handling the Skippers. Orban improved his record to 3-2 on the year with the complete game victory, allowing eight hits while striking out five and walking only two.
Offensively for Delta, Zack Booth went 3-for-3 with two RBI a stolen base and a run while Derrek Clyde added two hits and an RBI as did Watson Moore.
"It's nice to see that kind of offense come alive," said head coach Danny Smith. "We've been looking for a spark that will get us in a rhythm and allow us to catch fire. Hopefully, this was the day as the next four games are the most critical of our season."
Delta travels to Henry Ford on Thursday before heading to Muskegon on Saturday. Game times are 2pm and 1pm, respectively.
