St. Clair County Community College
Port Huron, MI – Delta College baseball traveled to Port Huron on Sunday to take on the Skipper of St Clair County Community College in the first of two scheduled double headers on the season. The Pioneers prevailed in game one by the score of 6-4 before dropping the nightcap, 5-1. The split leaves DC at 2-2 in conference play and 11-10 overall on the year.
The first game saw the visitors plate three runs in the second inning with the big blow being a Hunter David double down the line that scored Jeff Wright and Justin Heinlein to make it 3-0. Zach Schirmer got the scoring going earlier in the inning on a squeeze by Wright.
After the Skippers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, Delta would get one back in the top of the third as Ty Robbins singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on sacrifice bunt by Brady Leppek. Schirmer would then double down the left field line to score Robbins and make it 4-2.
A solo homerun by St. Clair made it 4-3 heading to the sixth where DC would again plate two runs as Z Westley doubled in Heinlein and Dean Marais. An error and two walks would end the day for Delta starting pitcher Jake Gross who gave way with the bases loaded in a 6-3 game to relief pitcher Guy Henika. After an infield single plated one run, Henika would get an inning ending strikeout to stymy the threat. He would then throw a perfect seventh to collect his first save of the season.
David led the offense with two doubles while Leppek with two-for-three and Heinlein drew three walks and scored two runs. Gross got the win to improve to 1-2 on the season, striking out 10 batters and giving up two earned runs.
The second game saw St. Clair get on the board in the third inning on a solo homerun before Delta would answer with a run of it's own in the top of the fourth to tie the game at one apiece. But that's all the offense they would muster, as the Skippers scored four runs in the sixth to get the win, 5-1.
Tyler Kirkwood took the loss on the hill despite striking out 11 and giving up just one earned run. Offensively for DC, Ty Robbins had two hits while Heinlein added a double.
"Both Gross and Kirkwood threw lights out," said head coach Danny Smith. "Our offense is just anemic right now and we can't seem to find the right pieces for the right fit."
Delta next hosts Lansing on Tuesday in the second half of their cancelled four game series from March 24th. First pitch is scheduled for 2pm at Wickes Park.
