DC Splits Tune Up Versus Alma
Stage set for #16 Jackson
Alma, MI – Delta College played a non-conference double-header against Alma College on Wednesday, winning game one 2-1 before dropping the nightcap, 6-1. The split leaves Delta at 14-13 on the year while they remain at 4-4 in conference play. It was the 27th consecutive game the Pioneers have played on the road to start the season.
Game one saw DC get a quick run in the first inning as Aaron Esparza scampered home on a Dean Marais ground out to make it 1-0. The Pioneers would extend the lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth when Ty Robbins drew a leadoff walk before stealing second base. He was then bunted to third by Peyton Jurek before coming home on a Ty Jones RBI grounder.
Meanwhile, Delta starter Chase Beyersdorf had thrown five innings against the Scots without giving up a hit. His no-no was ruined, however, in the bottom of the sixth with an inside-the-park homerun to cut the lead to 2-1. One batter later, Alma put the game tying run at first base with no outs which prompted Delta head coach Danny Smith to pull Beyersdorf in favor of Ty Robbins.
Robbins promptly ended the threat with two strikeouts and flyout to preserve the 2-1 lead. He would also throw the seventh, getting two strikeouts and a ground out to collect his second save of the season. Delta collected just two hits offensively but were aided by three hit batters and four walks. Beyersdorf got the win to improve to 1-1 on the season
Alma jumped on Delta starter Ryan Woods in game two, taking a 6-1 lead after three innings before the game was called due to darkness. Once again the Delta offense was anemic as Dean Marais collected two hits while Mitch Morely had an RBI double to account for the lone DC run. Woods took the loss to drop to 0-1 on the season.
Delta is next in action against national 16th ranked Jackson Community College on Friday as they open the four game series at Northwood University due to conditions at Wickes being unplayable. They will then travel to Jackson on Saturday to finish the series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 2pm while Saturday's set is scheduled to kick off at 1.
