Henry Ford College
Taylor, MI – The Delta baseball team traveled to Henry Ford College on Saturday to play the front end of a home-and-home double header beating the Hawks in game one by the score of 8-3 before completing the sweep with a 9-2 win in the nightcap. The wins up Delta's record to 19-16 on the year and improve them to 9-7 in the MCCAA.
After giving up two runs in the first inning of game one, Delta starting pitcher Thomas Fortney stymied the Henry Ford offense the rest of the way and threw a complete game to get the win. He improves to 2-2 on the year. Hunter David led the offense going three-for-three with two doubles a triple and walk. Z Westley tagged his seventh homerun of the year while Justin Heinlein collected four RBI and added nine assists and a putout without making an error.
Delta took the lead in the fourth inning plating four runs to go up 4-2 before giving one back in the bottom of the frame. They would tack on four more runs in the sixth to put the game away.
The second game featured another stellar pitching performance from sophomore Justin Jurek as he also went the distance to collect the win and improve his record to 4-2 on the season. He gave up just three hits and two earned runs while striking out five. Dean Marais had two hits including his third homerun on the year, a two run blast in the second inning – an inning in which Delta plated five runs to go up 7-0.
The Pioneers collected seven hits and drew nine free passes offensively.
"It's the first time we've played back-to-back all around good league contests," said head coach Danny Smith. "Our pitching was lights out and we needed that because we have eight games in four days so any time a pitcher can throw a complete game and get a win we'll take it."
Delta next hosts Lorain Community College of Ohio tomorrow in a Region XII qualifier double-header. The Pioneers swept Lorain earlier in the season at Lorain. Game one of the scheduled double-header begins at 1pm at Wickes Park in Saginaw Township.
