Barbourville, KY – The Delta College baseball team opened the 2019 season in Kentucky on Thursday, as they battled Union College in a double-header. Game one saw the Pioneers win, 8-4 while game two ended in a 9-9 after the game was called due to rain.
Delta jumped on the board first in game with a single run in the second inning before putting up three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Kyle Belger, Cam Fowler, Matt Fisher and Evan Pocius all strong together hits to account for the runs. Union cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth before Delta put the game away with four runs of their own in the sixth and seventh. Union made one last claim at the win by putting up two in the seventh and had the bases loaded before Alex Snider came on to pick up his first save of the season.
Alex Dingee (1-0) picked up the win on the hill for Delta after throwing 5.2 innings and giving up two earned runs on three hits with give strikeouts. Evan Pocius had a big game on offense for Delta with two hits and five RBI while Fowler and Belger each two hits and two runs.
Game two saw Delta put up a five-spot in the first inning and jump out to a 9-3 lead heading in to the bottom of the sixth. Union stormed back, however, putting up six runs on two hits, two walks and two hit batters to tie the game at 9-9. With neither team scoring in the seventh and the rain coming down, the game was called.
Jack Rossbach (0-1) took the loss in relief of starting pitcher Connor Moe who threw 5.1 innings and giving up three runs on three hits while striking our four. Jeff Allen led the DC offense with three hits and two runs while Nolan Raymond collected three hits and two RBI.
Delta is next in action on Saturday morning as the start a week long series of games in Winter Haven, Florida. They will play Frederick Community College out of Maryland in game one before taking on Lincoln Land in game two out of Springfield, Illinois.
