Delta Win Streak at Three Games
Pioneers beat up on Vermilion, 13-1
Winter Haven, Florida – The Pioneer baseball team established a three-game winning streak on Saturday as they defeated Vermilion CC out of Minnesota 13-1 in the final day of the RussMatt baseball invitational. The win now puts Delta's record at 5-6-1 on the year as they pack their bags and head back to Michigan for the regular season portion of their schedule.
Drew Schultz (2-0) was dominating on the mound for Delta, giving up an unearned run in the first inning while throwing a complete game and striking out 11 batters. He allowed just four hits total in the game and faced just 26 hitters, five over the minimum.
Meanwhile, Delta's offense scored four runs in the first and second innings take an 8-1 lead before collecting a single run in the fourth and four more in the sixth to run away with the win. Cam Fowler had two hits and two runs while Matt Fisher had a triple, a single, two runs and two RBI to lead the offense. Nolan Raymond collected two hits while Jackson Lund went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
"We learned a lot down here this week," said head coach Danny Smith. "We are more versatile now than we were when we left Michigan, we have a great grasp on where our lineup works most efficiently and we know what areas we need to dig into before we open league and regional play in a couple of weeks."
Delta will play non-league contests against Ivy Tech on the 17th and Northwood University on the 19th before opening their league and regional season against defending Region XII champion Schoolcraft CC in Detroit on the 22nd.
