Delta Baseball Takes 3-of-4 From Macomb
Sweep inches DC closer to .500 mark on season
Wickes Park – For the first time since game three of the 2019 season, the Delta College Baseball team is knocking on the door of a .500 record courtesy of a Saturday sweep of visiting Macomb Community College. With 5-2 and 11-7 wins, the Pioneers are now 16-17-1 on the year overall and sit at 8-8 in the MCCAA East.
Delta got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning as Matt Fisher scampered home on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. It remained that way until the bottom of the third inning when Carson Longstreth hit his third double of the series and was brought home on a Nolan Raymond single to make it 2-0. The lead would get to 3-0 in the fourth as Cam Fowler doubled home Cam Floyd after he led the inning off with a walk.
Macomb cut the lead to 3-1 with a single run in the fifth but the Pioneers added two more in the bottom of the frame when Longstreth blasted a 2-run no-doubter over the scoreboard in left-center for his second homerun of the season to make it 5-1. Macomb would make a game of it though, as they loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with one out before Andy Sills came on in relief to get a 4-6-3 double play to collect his first save of the season and end the game.
Jackson Lund picked up the win on the hill to even his record at 2-2 on the season. He threw six and a third innings, giving up one earned run on four hits while striking out six. Longstreth (double, HR, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Nolan Raymond (3-for-3, RBI) led the offense for Delta.
Macomb scored an unearned run off of Delta starting pitcher Alex Dingee to begin game two but the Pioneers answered back in a big way, plating six runs on five hits, a walk and two errors to take a 6-1 lead they would never surrender. Nick Johnson scored Matt Fisher on an RBI triple to get things started and would scored on an error before Lund scored two more on a double. Andrew Gauthier and Cam Fowler each had RBI singles in the frame as well.
The Monarchs made a game of it as they plated four runs over the next three innings to make it a 6-5 game. But Delta had an answer on offense as Fowler singled and scored on a Fisher triple while Longstreth squeezed home Fisher to make it 8-5.
With the score 11-7 in the top of the seventh, relief pitcher Carson Longstreth was facing a runner at first with one out when a fly ball to left was caught by Andrew Gauthier for out number two. The runner at first – who hadn't tagged up – jogged back to first base and was gunned down by Gauthier on a perfect throw to end the game.
Alex Dingee collected the win to improve to 3-1 on the year while Longstreth picked up his first save. Dingee went four and two third innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits with three K's. Nick Johnson had a big game at the plate offensively, going three-for-four with two runs while Nolan Raymond added a single and a triple in four at-bats. Jackson Lund (two hits, three RBI) and Andrew Gauthier (two hits, two RBI) chipped in offensively as well.
Delta will host Lorain County (Ohio) on Wednesday in their second Region XII matchup of the season. Currently, Schoolcraft (3-1) and Owens (2-0) hold down the first two regional spots while Delta (1-1) and Lorain (0-4) are in third and fourth, respectively. First pitch is scheduled for 2pm.
