Delta Drops Home Opener
Begins season at 0-3
University Center, MI - Sometimes in athletics, the toughest opponent to overcome is yourself.
The Delta Pioneers men's basketball team watched an early nine point lead slip away as they continued to make defensive mistakes that led to easy Mid-Michigan Community College points and ultimately served as their demise in a 80-74 loss to open the home portion of their season on Saturday. The loss drops DC to 0-3 on the season, but the season is still young -which ironically, fits the Delta roster.
"We are a young team that is making some very young mistakes," said first year head coach Carlos McMath. "Right now, we have one big opponent that continues to beat us and that is ourselves."
Up nine points with four minutes to play in the first half, the Pioneers seemed to be pulling away. But the Lakers made a furious comeback, cutting in to the lead and heading in to the half with Delta up just one point. The point barrage would continue, unfortunately, for Mid Michigan as they passed the Pioneers at the onset of the second half and wouldn't look back winning going away.
Manny Dosanjh led DC with 17 points, seven assists and four boards while Allante Wheeler chipped in 14 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.
"These guys love each other," said McMath, "but we are still learning how to complement each other on the court."
Delta will have another opportunity to pick up it's first win of the season on Wednesday as they play host to the Jets of Jackson Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm.
