Pioneer Men Win Second Consecutive Game
Improve to 2-0 in MCCAA play
University Center, Michigan - The Delta College men's basketball team looked to keep their momentum going on Wednesday after picking up their first win of the season two nights earlier. With Alpena Community College visiting, that is exactly what they did in picking up an 80-55 victory to improve to 2-12 on the season and 2-0 in MCCAA East division play.
"Tonight I believe we played for each other and not with each other for the entire game," said head coach Carlos McMath. "We came out with intensity and sustained offensive execution that the home fans have only seen glimpses of during the season."
Jon Swift and Martel Handley led the defensive effort in the first half frustrating the Alpena front court into turnovers which led to transition scores for the Pioneers. DC capped off an impressive first half with a late drive by Swift and dish to Tyler Ellis for the easy lay in, taking the lead to 42-24 heading in to halftime.
The Pioneers continued to keep the pedal to the metal in the second half sparked by the bench play of William Williams and Mason VanPamel. Alpena made a run in the second half to cut the lead to 16, but the outcome was never in doubt as Delta won by 25.
DC was led by Devin Smith with 16 points and nine rebounds while Williams added 14 points with four steals in his first action of the year.
"Our team has been focusing on being engaged while on the bench so they are prepared to contribute once their number is called," McMath States.
The Pioneers ended the game with 10 of the 12 players score, helping to build momentum early in conference play. The Pioneers will be back in action on the road Saturday January 9th at Wayne Community College with tip-off at 3pm.
