Saturday afternoon, the Delta College men's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to take down Lake Michigan Community College 105-84. The Pioneers used a combination of inside and outside play to get off to a hot start and never looked back.
In a game that started off back and forth, it was Jovon Thomason that came off the bench to spark the Pioneers. He hit a three pointer and then followed that up with a three point play to push the Pioneer lead to 29-19 at the nine minute mark in the first half. Jon Swift then went on a 6-0 run of his own to extend the lead to 45-26 with two and a half minutes left. The Pioneers finished the half on a 9-5 run and headed into the locker room up 54-31.
In the second half, the Pioneers increased their defensive pressure and continued to shoot well from the outside. Two three pointers by Trey Newsham pushed the lead to 64-36 and the Pioneers cruised to a 21 point victory.
"We knew they had just had a tough game against nationally ranked Oakland Community College the night before," said head coach Carlos McMath. "We figured that if we kept up our defensive pressure, eventually it would wear them down. That proved to be the deciding factor tonight."
The Pioneers had seven guys in double figures. They were led by Trey Newsham with 20 points. Jon Swift finished with 19 points, 8 assists, 6 steals, and 5 rebounds. Wheeler had 18 points while Virgil Walker and Jovon Thomason each chipped in with 11 points. Mason Vanpamel and Torion Wilson both had 10 points. Wilson also had a team high 11 rebounds.
"I was really happy with how we moved the ball," said McMath. "We played unselfish basketball and made the extra pass. In the end it allowed us to turn good shots into great shots and guys knocked them down."
The Delta Men's basketball team (4-3) will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Muskegon Community College. Game time is 7:00.
