The weather has not been cooperative for the Lady Pioneers so far this year, as this is just the first doubleheader that has been able to be played since their return from Florida. In the opening game against Alma, Sophomore Pitcher Kalen Tchorzynski tossed a complete game earning the victory for Delta. Striking out 2 over the course of her 7 innings of work, Kalen kept the ball in play and relied on her solid defense lead by Jenna Franzel's 8 putouts for support. Makenna Smith lead the way on offense crossing the plate 3 times.
In the nightcap, Alma jumped out to a commanding lead and was on the verge of an 8 run mercy, when the Lady Pioneers started to fight back. Errors had haunted Delta early and ultimately chased Starter Kaylee Cypher and left Delta in a large hole. They refused to give up however, homeruns by Emilee Robart and Tchorzysnki helped to get them back into the game. Carley Starnes and Robart each combined for 4 Runs Driven In, and they closed the gap of over 10 runs to 2 late, but ran out of time, losing a nail-biter 18-16.
"The story of the second game is that they never gave up," Assistant Coach Andrew Ornelas said after the game.
The non-conference slate for Delta has come to a close with Conference play opening up on Tuesday when they take on St. Clair County Community College at home, a team they went 3-1 agaisnt last season.
