Delta Women Drop Home Opener
Lose to Mid Michigan Community College, 59-49
University Center, MI - One week after opening their season with impressive wins at the Erie CC invitational tournament, the women's basketball team of Delta College opened the home portion of their season with a disappointing loss to Mid-Michigan CC, 59-49.
Just as in their first two games of the young season, Delta got in early foul trouble which led to six point deficit after the first quarter before Delta was able to bring it to 32-28 at the half.
"We had too many mental breakdowns in the first and second quarters," said head coach Kelly Miller.
Delta was limited to just a single bucket in the third quarter as the Mid-Michigan lead grew to 12 points heading in to the final stanza at 42-30. Delta was never able to recover from there, dropping their first contest on the season to fall to 2-1 overall.
"Lack of offensive production in the third didn't help the cause for a comeback," said Miller. "We never quit and actually outscored them in the fourth (quarter). "
Jayde Abenth led the charge offensively for the Pioneers with 13 points on five of twelve shooting. She also collected five steals while Lauren Rogers added ten points and ten boards.
"We know that with such a young group we will takes come lumps but it's better to lose and learn now than to lose in the conference when it matters most," said Miller.
Delta plays MCCAA West division conference for Jackson Community College on Wednesday in a home contest.
"We're looking forward to getting back in the gym for practice and preparing ourselves for Wednesday," said Miller. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm.
