Delta Loses to Macomb CC
Start conference play at 0-1
Warren, Michigan – The Delta College women's basketball team traveled to perennial power Macomb Community College on Monday where they dropped a 73-50 decisions to the Monarchs. It was the first game in 13 days for the Pioneers, and the rust showed.
"Sometimes it's tough to carry over what you worked on in practice into games," said Head Coach Kelly Miller. "Time to rest is always needed, but the holiday break and the time off this year certainly hurt us more than helped."
Macomb jumped out to a six point lead after one quarter and took a 33-27 lead into halftime. That lead ballooned to nine points after three quarters before the Monarchs finished on a 23-9 run in the fourth.
"We have to find away to remain productive when some players are not having the best games," said Miller. "It's always a tough game going into Macomb's gym to begin with and this year was no different. But they took advantage of home court and knocked down open looks when we didn't."
Jayde Abenth let the Pioneers offense with 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting to go along with six rebounds. Jenna Szostak added 13 points and two assists.
"Now that were in conference play it doesn't matter what happened in preseason," said Miller. "Its about coming out and taking care of business now that counts."
The Pioneers started the season strong, winning the Erie CC Invitational along with four of their first six contests. Since that time, they have gone 3-4 overall and sit at 7-6 on the season, 0-1 in conference play.
"Despite our youth we feel that we have a great chance to make some noise in the conference," said Miller. "We just have to be mentally strong enough to make it happen."
Delta next plays on Wednesday when they host Alpena Community College at 5:30pm.
