Delta Women Stay Hot
Lady Pioneers win fourth straight
Dearborn, MI – The Delta College women's basketball team continued its strong conference start on Saturday as they went on the road to knock off Henry Ford Community College, 79-59. The win pushes their record to 11-6 overall on the year and 4-1 in the conference, one full game behind league leading Schoolcraft.
"We talk a lot about our defense creating offense," said head coach Kelly Miller. "We did that today by limiting second chance points, getting steals and passing it up for easy outlet layups."
Delta forced 20 turnovers in the game which sparked a huge first half offensive output and 11 point lead at the break. Jayde Abenth scored 20 of her 29 points in that stretch to go along with 6 rebounds and 5 steals overall on the game.
"Jayde really came alive today," said Coach Miller. "She's starting to see that teams can't match up with her very well and she's beginning to understand how to take advantage of that."
"Ashley was huge today as well. (Her) constant energy, hustle and getting in the passing lanes led to multiple steals. We definitely fed off of her energy."
Lee finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists while Jenna Szostak added 14 points, six boards, three assists and three steals. Brooke Schutte rounded out the offense with seven points and eight rebounds.
"The stat line doesn't show how Brooke has been learning to play the point in a 'trial by fire' atmosphere," said Miller. "As someone that was used to playing off the ball, it's nice to see her play keep us in games and keep us under control. She limits the turnovers and makes smart decisions. Overall, she's doing a great job."
Delta had another strong showing at the free throw line, going 18 of 22 (82 percent) to help their cause.
"As long as we keep pushing each other and striving for progress every day, we can be a very dangerous team come post season play."
