Delta Women Drop Game to Oakland
Look to rebound at home on Saturday
Auburn Hills, MI – The Delta women basketball team traveled to Oakland Community College on Wednesday where they dropped a 84-53 decision to the Raiders. It was the eighth win in a row for Oakland who now trail first place Schoolcraft by two games in the MCCAA East. Delta, meanwhile, falls to 7-5 in the conference and 14-10 overall. Currently, the Pioneers are in fifth place, one-half game behind Macomb.
"Oakland is a very tough match up for us and we knew that going into the game," said head coach Kelly Miller. "They have very strong guard play and that can cause match-up problems when they are clicking."
The 31-point loss was surprising, considering that Delta beat Oakland 73-70 just four weeks ago,
After a very well played first quarter Delta trailed by just three points. Oakland then turned on the offense and ballooned the lead to 11 by half time. From there, they never looked back.
"We didn't stick to the game plan and seemed at times sluggish and lack luster," said Miller.
After trailing by 24 heading in to the fourth quarter, Delta would go on to get outscored 23-16 for the final margin. Jenna Szostak and Jayde Abenth each poured in 14 points to lead the offense while Tenesha Blair added 10.
"We know that we can't play the way we played Wednesday night again if we expect to go far in the tournament," said Miller. With three of the next four contests at home, however, Delta hopes to build momentum heading in to the Region XII, District H tournament which begins on March 1st.
The Pioneers next take on the Hawks of Henry Ford at home on Saturday, Tip off is scheduled for 1pm.
