Delta Loses to First Place Macomb
Finish first half of conference play in third place
Macomb, MI – With a three-way tie for first place at stake on Wednesday, the Delta Lady Pioneers dropped a 67-47 decision to host Macomb Community College. The first half of the MCCAA Eastern conference play didn't end the way that the Pioneers had hoped, as just two games prior to their contest with the Monarchs Delta found itself in a virtual tie for first. The loss now drops Delta to third place with a 5-2 conference record, two full games behind first place Macomb.
"They beat us playing their game and we didn't make adjustments," said head coach Kelly Miller.
The first quarter started well for the Pioneers as they were able to force multiple turnovers, giving them a slim two point lead heading to the second, 12-10. From there, however, the first place Monarchs imposed their will on Delta, driving to the basket and getting non-contested layups. Outscoring the visitors 22-14 in the quarter gave the hosts a six point cushion heading in to the half.
"We knew what they wanted to do and we didn't stop it," said Miller. "They won the game by sticking to their game plan and executing it - we played to their strengths."
The third quarter was a back and forth affair early as both teams continued to trade baskets. Macomb padded their lead by two overall and took an eight point lead into the final stanza.
"When you're on the road you can't trade baskets and rely on the refs to help you get back in the game," said Miller. "You have to create those moments with stops, effort, and grit. Tonight we just didn't have enough of that all around."
Macomb pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Delta 19-7 for the final twenty point margin. Freshman Harmany Williams played almost the entire game and took on most of the scoring load for DC, putting in 20 points to go with five boards and three assists. Lauren Rogers added 10 points as well.
"What it boils down to is applying what we practice and prepare to do and not faltering once adversity arises."
The loss against Macomb ends the first half of conference play with the Pioneers holding a 10-8 overall record. Should the playoffs start today, they would be hosting a first round game.
"We know what our ultimate goal is and that's to make it to the MCCAA championship game," reiterated Miller. "Right now we still have a chance to be there. We've seen all that these teams have to offer and we will hopefully learn from our mistakes and make the proper adjustments to get rolling here in the second half (of conference play)."
