Delta Fights Back, Loses in the Season Opener
Delta Drops to Rochester College JV to Open the 17-18 Season
The Shonda Long Era of Lady Pioneer Basketball is officially underway as Delta travelled to Rochester College to take on the JV Squad for the Warriors. The start of the game did not go in favor of the Pioneers, as they started out 1-8 from the floor, while Rochester started out hot from the field. This put Delta in an early hole that they would struggle to get out from. In the end, it was a 20 point halftime deficit for Delta.
After the intermission, there was a definite shift in the energy level, as the girls came out strong cutting the deficit down to 12. However, every time Delta would make a run, Rochester would hit a clutch three and slow the momentum down keeping the lead.
"I'm very proud of how the ladies came out in the second half with a lot of energy, executing and finishing plays" Head Coach Shonda Long said after her first game as coach. "We dug ourselves in such a big hole in the first half, when it was time for us to capitalize on our runs in the second half, we ran out of energy."
Delta would go on to lose the game 84-72. Harmany Williams lead the Lady Pioneers with 19 points and Marisa Morton added 18 as well.
"We'll get back in the gym and watch film to see what tweaks we need to make, and get ready for Kalamazoo Valley next week," Long added.
Up next, Delta will travel to Kalamazoo Valley and participate in the KVCC Invitational November 10 and 11.
