Delta College in the Community
The Pioneers of Delta College work hand in hand in the surrounding communities.
"Being involved in the community is a priority for our athletic program," states Shelly Raube, Athletic Director Delta College. The Pioneers have over 115 student-athletes participating in varsity athletics as well as giving back to the community. Jesse Wilbert said it best, " The surrounding communities support us and we like to give back to those communities." Jesse helped plant Daffodils in Bay City along with fitfy seven other athletes supporting the Beautification Project of Bay City.
The Pioneers are also involved in the Champions of Leadership Program, a program designed to link high school athletes with members of our athletic program to help students develop skills and knowledge they need to succee in life. Raube states,"We believe athletic leadership willbe highly significant in helping develop future leaders in athletic programs at the high school level and their communities." Currently, St. Charles, Breckinridge and Arthur Hill high school student - athletes are particpating in this program. These students are invited to Detla College one Friday a month for workshops and guest speakers challenging those who wish to take their drive beyond the playing fields. Students will focus on what it means to be successful, improtance of teamwork, Ethical leadership, competitive greatness and how to lead others to success.
It was exciting to see the interaction between the college age players and the high school athletes. The first meeting took place as Delta College hosted the high school students at Dow Diamonds to watch a Loon's game.
We are excited to see the positive outcomes we feel this program will create.
