Delta Women Win Home Opener
University Center, MI
The Lady Pioneers win in overtime with the golden goal scored in the 92 minute of the game. Jessica Hegenauer started the scoring off with a shot to the back of the net. Parker Majeske added yet another goal to close out the first half. Delta's defense played tough in the first half and keeper Ali Bourcier had a shut out going in to half time with a score of 2-0.
Delta had a decisive 2 goal lead has the Red Hawks of Lake Michigan started the scoring immediatley in the second half. The score was tied with 35 minutes to go in the second half. The Pioneers continued to pressure offensively, taking 21 shots on goal, however they could not find the back of the net. The game ended in regulation tied 2-2.
At the start of the first overtime period the Lady Pioneers had a flurry of shots on goal that ended when Gabrielle Sake passed a ball into the near post corner of the net to seal the win. Stenglein stated, "the girls fought hard tonight and they did not give up when the score was tied. They continued to fight defensivley winning every ball and knowing one of their shots would find the net."
Stenglein states, "this was a critical win for us, and it gave us confidence that we can get the goal when we need it, and that dedication to ball control will pay off in the end."
The Lady Pioneers take on Cincinnati State Technical Community College on Saturday, August 29th, with a game time of 1:00 PM.
