University Center, MI – It's been a tough week for the Lady Pioneers soccer program at Delta College. One week ago an upstart Lake Michigan squad found a way to beat Delta, 2-1. On Friday, the Pioneers traveled to Cincinnati State to take on a perennial power in the Surge and were soundly defeated, 6-1 before returning home on Sunday to take on league rival Schoolcraft.
The week didn't end any better than it started, unfortunately, as the Pioneers dropped a 7-1 decision to the Ocelots and saw their record fall to 4-6 overall and 4-3 in the conference. It is the first three-game losing streak in the five year history of the program.
Schoolcraft wasted no time in establishing its offense as they scored three times in the first ten minutes to take a 3-0 lead. They would take a 5-0 lead in to the half before Kaitlyn Begley scored on a Gabrielle Sake assist to make it 5-1 just after halftime.
But the Ocelots responded with three more goals as Shae van Gasen had a hat trick and two assist for five points overall. Delta managed just five shots on goal compared to an astounding 31 by Schoolcraft.
With the win, Schoolcraft remains atop the MCCAA standings at a perfect 8-0 while Delta falls into third place behind Muskegon. The Pioneers can still climb into second place, however, as they play Jackson, Muskegon and Ancilla to finish out their portion of the MCCAA schedule. They travel to Jackson Wednesday for a 4pm contest with the Jets.
