Sweep Season Series
October 8, 2015
Jackson, MI – The Delta women's soccer team got back to their winning ways on Wednesday against MCCAA foe Jackson Community College as they defeated the Jets, 2-0. With the win, Delta improves to 5-3 in the conference and in a tie with Muskegon for second place. They are now 5-6 overall on the year. The win concludes a season sweep of the Jets as the Pioneers won by an identical 2-0 score earlier in the season.
Leah Johnson put Delta on the board first with a goal in the twentieth minute. After taking on numerous Jackson players one on one, she snuck a shot past the Jets keeper to make the score, 1-0.
That's where the score remained as Delta continued to apply defensive pressure, covering served balls on free kicks and clearing them from the area. One of those clear outs was a long outlet pass to Aleisha Jones in the waning moments of the contest. Jones took the pass, battled two Jets player and then beat the keep with five second left in the game to give Delta the 2-0 win.
"I thought we had good intensity in the second half, and the girls did a much better job of playing as a team," said head coach Gary Stenglein. "We possessed the ball better in the second half because we focused on making the right pass, and getting it to the feet of our players."
"All in all, I was pleased with the effort and win today, and I was proud of how the girls responded to the challenges of a tough game against Jackson."
Delta next plays on Sunday where they host the Express of Owens Community College. The Region XII defeated Delta in a tightly contested contest earlier this year, 2-0. Game time is scheduled for 1pm.
