Delta Women Receive Post-Season Awards
Bourcier, Helpap, Grawey receive honors
University Center, MI - The Michigan Community College Athletic Association recently announced their post-season award winners for the 2015 women's soccer season. Three Delta College players were recognized for their outstanding play as such.
Gabrielle Helpap was selected as a first team, All-MCCAA midfielder as well as selected as a member of the All-Freshman team. She started nine games for the Pioneers and put 10 of her 15 shots on goal, picking up six points with two goals and two assists.
"Gabby is an outstanding player with tremendous passion and intensity," said Delta Coach Paul Stenglein. "She played this season while dealing with an injury and did not let it affect her play. She was a dominant player for us."
Helpap, hailing from Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central, was also selected as a member of the 2nd team for Region XII.
"Her skill and effort on the field caught the attention of most coaches in our region and she was properly recognized by them," said Stenglein.
Freshmen defensive back Shallon Grawey also picked up 2nd team Region XII honors along with being selected as an Honorable Mention pick for the MCCAA.
"Shallon is a high intense and intelligent defensive player that is very skilled at serving long balls into dangerous areas of the opposing team's defense." Another one of the sixteen freshmen on the 2015 squad, Grawey hails from Harbor Springs.
Said Stenglein, " She has a great leadership demeanor that helps motivate the team at critical periods of play, not to mention she is an excellent student that excels in the classroom as well as on the field."
The third member of the Pioneers that garnered post-season accolades was Goal Keeper Ali Bourcier as she collected first team all MCCAA as well as All-Freshmen team.
"She is a gifted keeper capable of making sensational saves in the goal," said Stenglein. "Ali is extremely positive and did a phenomenal job of leading the defensive players during hectic periods of play this past fall."
Bourcier started six games and played in 12 total, going 6-3 with one shutout and an .828 save percentage.
"She has a servant's heart and has been instrumental in leading community efforts since the day she arrived on campus. She is an example of how players can be highly successful in the classroom as well as on the field."
The Lady Pioneers finished the season with an 8-8 overall record while going 6-4 in the MCCAA, good enough for a third place finish.
