Delta Shuts out Davenport
Heat, Humidity Factor in Win
University Center, MI – The Delta College women's soccer team, coming off a tough loss to league leading Schoolcraft College, hosted the Davenport Panthers on Tuesday in a non-league contest. With the return of some key players the depth of the Pioneer's became too much for DU to handle as Delta won, 4-0. With the win, Delta is now 3-2 on the season and 2-2 in the MCCAA.
Playing in debilitating heat and humidity, the Pioneers used a strategy of constant subbing to wear down the Panthers defense and scored an early goal in the first half when an un-cleared corner kick was collected by Aleisha Jones and driven into the lower near post corner of the goal.
Delta would continue to apply solid offensive pressure throughout the first half but quality scoring opportunities were turned back by the Davenport defense. Holding down a 1-0 lead at heading in to the second half, Delta came out and continued to attack. Three minutes in to the second half, Gillian Carroll lofted a deep cross into the goal area where Kaitlyn Begley calmly headed it past the keeper for another score to up the lead to 2-0 in favor of DC.
Continuing to wear down the Panthers, Delta scored once again in the 68th minute as Chelsea Temple sent a cross to the far post where Madison Jewell drove the ball into the corner to make it 3-0. Four minutes later, Delta had another score as Paige Renshaw duplicated the play, this time assisting on a goal by Cailin King at the far post. King drove a low shot into the corner of the goal to finish the scoring for the game, 4-0.
"I was extremely pleased with the effort from the girls today," said co-head coach Paul Stenglein. "They committed to keep our offensive attacks easy to finish."
"Our defensive pressure was outstanding and we worked hard to win most of the 50/50 balls and stepped up to win most of the front balls from long services."
"We are excited about this quality win, and we are now focused on picking up a critical conference win on Saturday."
Delta hosts MCCAA foe Lake Michigan College on Saturday at 1pm. The Redhawks are winless on the season.
