Women's Soccer Drops Home Opener To Nationally Ranked Delta College

Leading into the season opener at home against Delta College, MU Ancilla Head Coach Destini Fullmer knew what her young Chargers were up against.  Delta came into the match ranked #4 in the NJCAA Division 3 preseason rankings and brought a strong tradition of excellence into the match.  Fullmer hoped to learn some things about her team while also having her group test themselves against one of the best teams in the country.  While it was Delta coming out on top with a 7-0 win, there was definitely some positive moments and also plenty of learning that took place for the Chargers.

Delta took the action of the game directly at MU Ancilla, finding the back of the net three times in the first five minutes of the match to establish control before the Chargers could even gain their footing.  The Charger defense tightened over the next 30 minutes of game action, keeping Delta off the scoreboard, before a late goal gave the visitors a 4-0 lead at the half.  The second half saw MU Ancilla compete and never give in even as the defecit grew.

Delta found the back of the net three more times in the second half as they ran away with a 7-0 win over the Chargers.

Coach Fullmer remained encouraged even in defeat.  "Delta is a top 5 team in the country for a reason.  They have a great team and a great program.  It was good for our girls to see what a top-level team looks like and it gives us something to continue to try to build towards.  I thought our girls were very overwhelmed in the first few minutes with nerves and Delta took advantage of that.  Once we settled in a little bit, we played some solid soccer and I think there is some things we can build off of."

Fullmer continued her thoughts with moving forward to the next few days ahead.  "It is not easy to start off the season against such a strong opponent but in some ways, I think it can help us to get a look at a team like that early.  We now have a few days to prepare for Lake Michigan College and that is where our attention will turn."

The Chargers will return to action on Wednesday, August 23rd, when they will host Lake Michigan College at 2:00 as the first part of a Women's/Men's double header.
