The Muskegon Community College Jayhawks handled Delta College Wednesday night, 72-58 at Bartels-Rhode Gymnasium. This was the second and final meeting between Muskegon and Delta in regular season conference play. In this matchup, the Jayhawks jumped out to a commanding lead in the first half thanks in part to their great halfcourt defense, closing out on shooters and not allowing for any second chance parts. Muskegon led 31-17 with just under nine minutes left to play. But an offensive dry spell plagued the Jayhawks, and they struggled against the Delta zone. Delta went on a 19-4 run to close out the first half, giving them a 36-35 lead heading into halftime.
Muskegon was able to figure out the zone look from Delta in the second half, allowing them to manufacture 37 second half points. But it was the Jayhawks defense that led them to victory, as Muskegon allowed only 27 second half points. The defense was led by the standout freshman forward Ny'Zhem Marshall, who finished with a staggering 16 points, 23 rebounds, four assists, and seven blocks. Sophomore guard Kevon Washington and sophomore forward Joe Russa finished with double doubles of their own. Washington finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds while Russau added 11 points and ten rebounds. Sophomore guard Will Chye poured in 16 points as well. The win moves the Jayhawks record to 12-9 overall and 5-2 in conference play. The Jayhawks hope to capture their sixth conference win of the season against Alpena Community College on Saturday, February 8th at Alpena Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:10 PM.
