Alma, MI – The Pioneers played their fifth and sixth games in three days on Monday as they faced the Alma College JV team in a non-conference double-header. Game one saw Delta win, 7-1 before pulling out the nightcap in extra innings, 4-1. The wins put DC's record at 22-19 on the season.
Tyler Kirkwood took the mound in the first game and dominated the Scots, throwing a complete game while allowing just five hits and striking out nine. The win improves his record to 3-1 on the season.
Offensively, Delta was led by Ty Robbins with three hits and two stolen bases while Derrek Clyde, Drew Harding and Luke Schrage each had two hits. Dean Marais also hit his team leading fourth homerun of the season.
Game two saw Ty Jones get his first start of the season on the hill for Delta and he didn't disappoint, throwing five innings of two-hit baseball to go along with four strikeouts before exiting with a 1-0 lead. Alma would tie the score at one apiece in the sixth.
Ty Robbins would take the hill in the bottom of the seventh and keep the game tied before Delta exploded for three runs on four hits and an error in the eighth inning to go up 4-1. Thomas Fortney came on to retire in the side in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win and collect his first save of the season. Robbins was credited with the win, the first of his collegiate career.
Offensively for the Pioneers, Tim Atkinson had two hits while Colin Meacham had a two-RBI single.
Delta next plays at Mott Community College to close out their 8-game in four days schedule. First pitch in the MCCAA clash is scheduled for 2pm.
