Wickes Park – The Delta baseball team split for the second day in a row as they hosted MCCAA East Division foe Macomb for the final two games of their four-game series. Game one saw the Pioneers lose 8-4 while game two saw them win, 4-2.
For the third consecutive game, DC jumped out to a lead in the first inning as a two-run error brought home Zack Booth and Hunter David. Macomb answered with three runs of their own in the top of the third to take a one run lead but Delta answered right back in the bottom half of the inning as David scampered home on a wild pitch.
Macomb went on to add single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before adding two in the seventh while Delta could only muster one run in the fifth. Jake Gross took the loss on the hill, dropping his record to 2-3 on the season. He threw four innings giving up four earned runs on four hits while striking out two.
Offensively, Delta was limited to two hits on the game.
Game two saw the Pioneers once again jump out to an early lead as Zack Booth led the game off with a walk before scoring on a Brady Leppek double. The score would remain 1-0 until the fourth inning when Zach Schirmer and Mitch Morley both singled before Justin Heinlein drew a walk to load the bases. A Zack Booth single made it a 2-0 before Hunter David doubled to bring home Heinlein and Booth and make it a 4-0 game.
Macomb would plate two runs off starting Delta pitcher Tyler Kirkwood to cut the lead to 4-2 in the sixth, but relief pitcher Ty Jones induced an inning ending double play before getting the Monarchs 1-2-3 in the seventh for the save. Offensively, Zach Schirmer had three hits and scored a run while Mitch Morely went 2-for-3. Kirkwood was credited with the win to improve his record to 3-2. He gave up two hits and struck out nine.
Delta will play a non-league game against SVSU on Tuesday before finishing their MCCAA schedule on Friday against Mott Community College.
