Delta Splits Best of Three Series With Elgin
Two teams will meet tomorrow with winner advancing to the NJCAA DIII World Series

Elgin, Illinois - After Saturday's contest was rained out, Delta College was finally able to begin the District B Super Regional on Sunday, dropping a heartbreaker 6-3 in game one against Elgin Community College before winning the nightcap, 9-5. The split in best of three series means that the winner of Monday's contest will earn a trip to the NJCAA World Series next week in Greeneville, Tennessee.
Game one saw DC down 1-0 heading in to the sixth when Ty Robbins scored from second on a Zack Booth triple. Booth was then brought home on a Hunter David single. Elgin tied it at 2-2 in the seventh.
Hunter David led off the top of the eighth with a double and stole third base then scored when the throw went in to left field. With the score 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, two outs and nobody on, Elgin got back-to-back-to-back singles to tie the game at 3-3. The Spartans would then hit a walk-off three run homerun for the win in the bottom of the 11th.
Zack Booth had two hits while Hunter David when 4-for-5 with two doubles. Thomas Fortney took the loss is relief to drop his record to 5-3 on the year.
Game two saw Delta fall behind 1-0 but pick up two runs in the bottom of the third when Justin Heinlein single and scored on a Zack Booth double. Booth then scored on a Hunter David single to center to make it 2-1. Elgin scored two runs in the fifth to go up, 3-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Mitch Morley singled and Justin Heinlein laid down a bunt single. Zack Booth then singled on a bunt to load the bases before Hunter David did the same to tie the game. Delta took the lead at 4-3 on a throwing error and with runners at second and third and no outs, Z Westley put down a suicide squeeze to score Booth and make it 5-3 in favor of the Pioneers.
Elgin cut in to the lead in the sixth to make it 5-4 before Delta scored another three runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead, 8-4. The two teams traded runs in the eighth for the final, 9-5 score.
Hunter David once again led the offense going 4-for-5 with six RBI while Zack Booth had two hits and two runs. Mitch Morley added three hits, three runs and an RBI and Justin Heinlein went two-for-three with three runs of his own.
Tyler Kirkwood threw five innings to get the win while Ethan Lesperance threw three innings of relief and Ty Jones collected the save by throwing a scoreless ninth while stranding two Elgin runners.
Delta is now 33-21 on the year. Tomorrow's contest is scheduled for 12pm CST at the Elgin Community College baseball complex.
