Green Wins Game One of Green-White World Series
Game two to be played tomorrow
Saginaw Township – The Green Team, coached by former Delta catcher Z Westley won the first game of the annual Green and White World Series on Friday, defeating the White Team by a score of 5-3 in the best of five series. Game two will take place on Saturday.
The White Team, coached by Delta alum Ty Robbins – struck first in game one as James Rosebrock scored on an error to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. The Green Team tied it up in the bottom of the fourth, however, as Dylan Steinke scored on a two-out double off the bat of Josh Nowicki.
The White Team retook the lead in the fifth as Rosebrock scored once again on a fielders choice RBI off the bat of Cam Fowler. The Green Team committed three errors in the inning, however. With the score at 2-1 heading in to the bottom of the frame, Hunter David laced a one-out double before being moved to third on a single by Brandon Bakos. David would scored on an RBI double by Danny Diaz to tie the game and Bakos would score on a wild pitch to give the Green Team their first lead of the game at 3-2.
The White would once again tie it up in the sixth, however, as Konner Vedrode drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Mitch Morley two-out single to make it 3-3. The Green Team answered once again in the bottom of the sixth when Aaron Esparza put down a perfect suicide squeeze that scored both pinch runner Ryan Maclin and Evan Pocious for the final 5-3 tally.
Drew Schultz picked up the win on the mound for the Green Team while Alex Dingee threw a perfect seventh inning for the save. Joe Tany was tagged with the loss for the White Team.
"I was pleased with how we continued to battle back after being down," said Westley about his team's win in the first game of the series. "We need to play better defense but we never felt like we were going to lose the game."
White Team coach Ty Robbins had no comment after the game.
Dylan Steinke drew three walks in three at-bats for the Green Team offense while David, Diaz and Nowicki all added doubles. Zach Schirmer had a double in three at-bats for the White.
