Detla Advances to Second Round of Region XII Tournament
Face off with Owens Express tomorrow
Sandusky, Ohio – The Delta College baseball team opened the Region XII tournament with a win on Tuesday, defeating Lorain Community College 3-1. The Pioneers, ranked number one in the region, will play Owens Community College at 11am tomorrow for a chance to advance to the championship on Thursday. The winner of Region XII moves on next weekend to play against the winner of Region IV in a best-of-three Super Regional where the champion will advance to the College World Series in Greeneville, Tennessee.
Jake Wright (Owendale Gagetown) collected the win for Delta on the hill, throwing eight innings and allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out nine and walking just one. He improves to 1-2 on the season with the victory. Drew Schultz (Pinconning) threw the ninth inning to collect his first save of the year.
Delta scored a run in the fourth inning as Nick Johnson (New Lothrop) singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a Carson Longstreth (Beaverton) sacrifice bunt and stole home plate on a failed squeeze attempt. Lorain answered back with a single and a triple to tie it at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame.
With the score still knotted at 1-1 in the top of the eighth, Johnson reached first base on a throwing error before Longstreth doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third with one out. Nolan Raymond (Standish Sterling) then laid down a perfect bunt to score both Johnson and Longstreth on a drawn in infield to give Delta the 3-1 tally.
"Jake Wright threw lights out after coming off an arm injury and not getting a lot of innings," said eighth year head coach Danny Smith. "He was the reason we were in a position to win this game along with our defense behind him."
Johnson led the offense with two hits while the Pioneers collected just five hits overall. Delta is now 26-24 and swept a region series against Owens earlier in the year. The Express (26-18) advanced with an 12-5 victory over Schoolcraft College earlier in the day.
