Midland, MI-
On Wednesday night the Delta College men's basketball team took their undefeated record on the road to face the Northwood University Timberwolves Junior Varsity squad. After overcoming a slow start, the Pioneers picked up the tempo and cruised to a 92-54 win.
The first part of the game was dominated by turnovers and baskets were hard to come by. With the score tied 16-16 and ten minutes left to play in the half, freshman guard Leonte Parker came into the game and gave the Pioneers just what they needed. A Parker jump shot got the Pioneer offense going and with two minutes left a Peyton Miller steal led to another Parker bucket and pushed the Pioneer lead to 36-23. The Pioneers and Timberwolves traded baskets to end the half and the Delta men took a 39-28 lead into the locker room.
The Pioneers picked up the pace in the second half and began the half on a 33-4 run. A Brandon Brackett pass found Peyton Miller for a layup pushing the lead to 72-32. With 3:30 left in the game Brackett made a beautiful pass to Evan Anderson and the Pioneers had their biggest lead of the night at 88-43.
"The bench really provided us with a spark in the first half," said Pioneer head coach Carlos McMath. "We came out a little flat and lacked energy in our execution. We turned the ball over and made some careless mistakes but guys came off the bench and really got us going."
For the night, the Timberwolves made nine three pointers while the Pioneers didn't make a three point shot going 0-4 from behind the line. The Pioneers dominated points in the paint with a 56-8 margin and also dominated the Timberwolves in transition points outscoring them 18-2.
The Pioneers had a balanced scoring attack with seven guys scoring eight or more points. Leading the way was Martel Handley with 15 points and 4 steals. Cedric Moten added 12 points with Justin Person and Peyton Miller both adding 10 points apiece. Leonte Parker, Jalen Fykes, and Evan Anderson each had 8 points.
"We have a good balance of freshmen and sophomores," said McMath. "We are also a very deep team and these guys know that when their number is called they need to step up. As a coaching staff we have confidence in all fourteen of our rostered guys so if one is not getting it done, we have developed the next man up mentality."
With the win, the Delta men are now 4-0. The Pioneers are back in action November 20th when they host Olivet College. Tipoff is 6:00 at Pioneer Gymnasium.
