Delta Knocked Out of District J Tourney
Triples their win total from one year ago
Columbus, OH – The Delta College women's softball team finished their run in the District J tournament on Thursday, starting off the day with a win against Macomb Community College, 3-1 before falling to Oakland Community College in the loser's bracket championship game, 2-1.
Jenson Tchorzynski picked up the complete game victory in game one on the mound, pitching all seven innings while allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts.
Delta got on the board first when Taylor Wozniak reached on an error and eventually scored on a double steal of home plate. DC would add to its lead in the third as Wozniak once again got things going with a one-out single and advanced to second on a bunt single by Alyssa Westphal. Shelby Bailey then singled down the right field line and when the ball was misplayed, Wozniak scampered home to stake Delta to a 2-0 lead heading in to the sixth.
Tchorzynski ran in to trouble in the sixth as Macomb would score an unearned run to cut in to the score 3-1. With runners at second and third and no outs, Tchorzynski would bear down and get a strikeout and back-to-back infield pop ups to escape trouble and send Delta to the seventh holding on to the lead.
Delta wasn't out of the woods yet, entering the seventh inning as the Monarchs would load the bases with one out. But Tchorzynski would prove once again why she's been the ace of the staff all season as she got a fly out to left and a ground out to short to end the game and preserve Delta's second win of the regional, 3-1.
Bailey led the offense for the Pioneers going three-for-four at the plate and scoring a run while seven other players each had a hit.
In the second contest of the day with a chance to advance to the tournament finals, the Pioneers would face the Raiders of Oakland Community College – a team they defeated earlier in the tournament 4-2.
Shelby Bailey took the mound for Delta and threw six innings while allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out four.
Oakland scored both of their runs in the first as a single and an error put runners on second and third with one out. A bunt to first led to two runs to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead heading in to the second inning.
Delta cut the lead in half in the top of the second as Blake Garner scored on a Jenson Tchorzynski single but the offense couldn't muster any more opportunities as Oakland cruised to the victory.
Alyssa Westphal led the offense with two hits for Delta.
"Even though we didn't win the regional, the season was still a success," said Westphal. "We tripled out wins from last season and earned a better reputation for our program in the process."
Tchorzynski echoed Westphal's sentiment.
"I think we laid a great foundation for next year's team," said the sophomore two-year starter. "I am very proud of my team and Delta College softball for what we accomplished."
Delta finished the season at 19-25, improving their record from 2015 of 6-20.
