DC Comes Back for Win
Defeat Lansing to even record at 2-2
Lansing, MI – The Delta College women's basketball team went on the road to play against the Lansing Stars and although they started out rough, they eventually pulled out a 64-57 victory. The win evens their record to 2-2 on the year.
Delta surrendered 19 points in the first quarter via multiple easy baskets to trail by 14 points heading into the second stanza. Another slow offensive start in the second quarter made it 28-16 at the half.
"I'm not sure why we continue to start games off so slowly," said head coach Kelly Miller. "But we will continue to make changes until we find the intensity that we need."
Lansing would push the 12-point deficit to 16 points early in the third quarter before Delta responded. After going on a 24-12 run, Delta was able to pull within a couple buckets before eventually knotting the score at 40-40 heading into the fourth quarter.
"Once again, our freshmen stepped it up in a major way giving us energy and intensity which allowed to us to make that run and get it back to even," said Miller.
Delta finally took the lead for good in the fourth quarter and was able to control the game and the score from there. Lansing made a late run of their own but DC buried multiple free-throws to go away with the win. On the game, Delta turned the ball over 21 times but was able to turn Lansing over 28.
"From Harmany (Williams) attacking the zone and getting to the free throw line, to Wask (Waskwane Stonefish), Rachel (Briggs), and Alexis (Sanch) taking charges, coming up with loose balls and steals….our freshman showed us that they are ready to play and do what we are asking as far as effort and intensity."
Harmany Williams led all scorers with 20 points while Jenna Szostak added 16 for Delta.
The Lady Pioneers are back in action on the road next Tuesday, November 22nd, traveling to Kellogg. Game time is 5:30pm.
