Pioneer of The Week 1/11- Skylar Eckert
After a historic freshman season, Eckert is the first to be named Athlete of the Week in the new year.
The 2017 season was an ultra-successful one for Eckert, breaking the school record for goals and assists in the season, showcasing her strong offensive skillset. Recovering from an ACL injury, it took Eckert a few games to get into the rhythm of running around and playing soccer again. When she figured it out, she took off. A two goal game against University of Michigan Dearborn and a Hat Trick against Jackson in back to back games, sprung Eckert to a stretch of 18 goals in 14 games to end the season, including scoring in the final 11 games of the season.
"Skylar came to us as a high power forward from Clio, and she continued her dominance at the collegiate level," Head Coach Paul Stenglein said of Skylar. "She is a taller, powerful player that is very athletic. Her dominance on the field this year was a great example of why she was a 1st Team All-American."
She did not slow down late in the season when they games got tougher, she raised her level of play and continued to be a leader for the Pioneers.
"Skylar led the team in goals and assists this year, and she did something I did not expect to be done," Stenglein added. "She broke the single season scoring and assist records that had stood for six years. She has a great potential to play at a number of universities at various levels after she is done at Delta. Not only is she a great player, she is also just a great person. She is a wonderful young lady to be able to coach."
Off the field she had a stellar semester too, earning a 3.667 Grade Point Average and exemplifies what we are looking for in our student athletes. We're excited to see what Skylar has in store for 2018 and beyond!
