Mott Snaps DC Women's Four Game Streak
Delta Athletics water drive a success
University Center, MI – The Delta College women's basketball teams had four straight wins heading into Wednesday night's contest with Mott Community College. The Pioneers were looking to push their record to a nice and tidy 5-1 in conference play and 12-6 overall. But the visiting Bear's had something else in mind as they escaped with a 69-66 win, dropping DC to 4-2 in the league with conference leader Schoolcraft and St. Clair County waiting for them in their next two contests.
"For us it was never about a winning streak," said head coach Kelly Miller when asked about getting to the fifth straight win. "We take it one game at a time and try to get better each game."
Down three with twelve seconds to go and possession of the ball, the Pioneers were unable to get a final shot up to tie the game.
"Mott capitalized on our mistakes," said Miller. "We didn't hustle tonight and those possessions where they got easy outlet baskets ultimately led them to the lead and forced us to play from behind."
"We know how to fix that. We'll be prepared next time."
The loss drops Delta to the fourth spot in the MCCAA Eastern Conference with Macomb (4-1), St. Clair (4-1) and Schoolcraft (5-0) above them.
"We don't need motivation to play Schoolcraft," said Miller. "We split with them last year and then they knocked us out of the post – season on our floor. We have to play our best game to beat them."
To say that the post-season is still in their hands is an understatement. Delta travels to Livonia on Saturday to take on the Ocelots before heading to St. Clair (Wednesday) and hosting Macomb (Saturday, Jan. 30), all three teams ahead of them in the standings.
"On one accord, we just have to get back to doing the things that got us those four consecutive conference wins. And we will."
**** Wednesday night's contest featured a water drive for the athletes of Mott Community College as they continue to experience a quality water shortage in certain areas of Flint where many athletes live. In all, Delta College collected and donated 186 cases of bottled water to send home with the Bears.
