Delta Steamrolls Wayne County
41 point win keeps DC perfect in league play
University Center – The Delta College women's basketball team continued their dominance over Wayne County on Saturday with a 101-60 victory. The Pioneers have never lost a contest to the women from Wayne, in contests that date back to the mid-80's. It is Delta's second win in a row and ups their season record to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in the MCCAA Eastern division.
"Although we were outscored in the first quarter we felt like we played well," said long time DC coach Kelly Miller. "We missed layups and free throws and even though we didn't win that quarter, we picked it up the next quarter and the rest of the game."
Led by freshman Harmany Williams with a 26 point outpouring, the Ladies took the lead in the second quarter to finish the half with an 18-point cushion, 50-32. Delta would go on to score 33 points in the third while limiting Wayne to just 14 to put the game out of reach the rest of the way.
"Harmany was a starter for us earlier in the season and definitely has what it takes to be a starter now," said Miller. "She's accepted her role as that spark off the bench and it has helped us offensively and defensively."
The Pioneers, coming off a strong defensive performance on Wednesday against Alpena, continued that trend holding the visitors to just 14 points in each of the first three quarters. Seldom did the Wildcats gather an offensive board while Delta forced multiple turnovers and collected a season high 19 assists on offense.
Jenna Szostak had another strong performance for Delta on offense, pouring in 21 points with nine rebounds and three assists to up her points per game average to a team leading 15.2. Ashley Lee, Brianna Herner and Lauren Rogers each chipped in 12.
"We know that if we do what we're supposed to do in practice it will translate to good basketball come game time and today's game showed just that - effort, energy and intensity for 40 minutes," finished Miller.
Delta is back in action on Wednesday as they host Oakland Community College in another MCCAA East game. Oakland comes in to the contest winless on the year with a 0-13 record overall and 0-2 in league play. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30.
