Delta College Battles Hard Against Mid Michigan Despite Challenging Outcome
Delta College's women's basketball team faced a formidable Mid Michigan College squad on January 22, 2025, at the Morey Fieldhouse. Though the game ended in a 137-46 loss for Delta, the Pioneers showed determination and flashes of potential against a dominant Lakers team.
Mid Michigan College came out firing on all cylinders, scoring 31 points in the first quarter while limiting Delta to just six. The Lakers maintained relentless defensive pressure and a high-powered offense, building a 72-15 lead by halftime. Despite the deficit, the Pioneers refused to give up, improving their offensive rhythm in the second half and scoring 31 points over the final two quarters.
Sophomore forward Hailee Jefferson led Delta with eight points, shooting an efficient 4-for-7 from the field while also grabbing four rebounds. Freshman Haven Vasold contributed six points and four rebounds, showcasing her hustle on both ends of the floor. Guard Ja'Leeah Griggs added seven points, demonstrating her ability to attack the rim and earn trips to the free-throw line.
Mid Michigan's balanced attack was spearheaded by Chloe Watson, who scored a game-high 32 points, including an impressive 7-for-9 from beyond the arc. The Lakers displayed their depth with 13 players scoring, led by Watson, Rachel Resio (16 points, 10 assists), and Grace Chinavre (15 points). The team's 61.4% shooting from the field and 46.5% accuracy from three-point range were key to their commanding performance.
Despite the scoreline, Delta's players showed resilience and continued to fight until the final whistle. Coach Jason Brown, reflecting on the game, emphasized the importance of perseverance and growth. "We were out, played outworked and outhustled in every facet of the game but everyone that checked in didn't give up and I guess that's something to build on."
