Warren, MI – The Pioneers of Delta faced off in the first two games of their four game series with Macomb Community College on Friday, winning game one 5-3 before dropping the nightcap, 9-6. The split leaves Delta at 14-17 on the year overall and 6-8 in MCCAA East play.
In game one, Delta broke a scoreless tie with a four-run fourth inning thanks in large part to Jackson Lund's three-RBI double. Macomb would get an unearned run in the sixth to make it 4-1 but Delta scored in the seventh when Carson Longstreth doubled and came around on a Cam Floyd single for a 5-1 lead. Three singles and three passed balls made it 5-3 in the bottom of the frame but starting pitcher Drew Schultz got back-to-back K's to end the threat and the game.
Nick Johnson has a single, a stolen base and a run scored while Longstreth collected two hits and scored two runs of his own. Schultz picked up the win on the hill to improve to 4-1 on the year and increased his league-leading strikeout total with nine. He allowed just four hits.
Game two saw Delta give up five unearned runs while committing two errors and allowing four passed balls as the Monarchs won the game, 9-6. Jake Wright made his first start on the bump for DC, tossing two innings and giving up no earned runs on one hit while striking out four. Joe Tany relieved Wright and threw the final four innings, giving up four earned runs on three hits.
Macomb took a 2-0 lead after one and led 3-1 after two. Delta cut into their lead once again at 3-2, but another run in the bottom of the third made it 4-2 for the home squad. With the lead 6-2 in the fifth, Delta again made a comeback and the score stood at 6-5 heading in to the bottom of the sixth where Macomb scored three more and put the game out of reach.
Offensively, Delta was led by Nick Johnson with three hits while Cam Fowler added two hits and a run. Carson Longstreth again had a single and a double with a run and an RBI while Lucas Sella went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Games three and four will be played tomorrow at Wickes Park in Saginaw Township. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
