Delta College Men's Basketball Finalizes Coaching Staff
Delta College head men’s basketball coach Kyle Blackbourn has announced the coaching staff for the 2014-15 season. Joining the Pioneers staff will be assistant coaches- Carlos McMath, Joshua Southern, Charles Lord. Student Assistant- Caleb McIntosh, and strength and conditioning coach- Jesse Torres.

Coach Blackbourn had these comments on the new coaching staff: "I am thrilled with the staff that we will be going to battle with. Their enthusiasm and love for the game is clear to see. I look forward to working with them and improving the quality of our men's basketball program on a daily basis."
Meet the new Pioneers:
Carlos McMath- Coach Carlos McMath enters his first season with Delta College from Class A power Arthur Hill High School located in nearby Saginaw, Michigan. While at Arthur Hill McMath worked as the Head Assistant Coach/ Director of Basketball Operations for where his record is 74-16 with 3 Saginaw Valley League conference titles, district and regional championships. McMath has coached multiply high level Division I basketball players from Arthur Hill High school such as Maurice Jones (USC/Northwood), Jalen Adams (St. Bonaventure), Jordan Hare (Rhode Island), Eric Davis (Class of 2015, Texas Commit). McMath had the opportunity to play for and coach under Head Coach and Uncle Greg "Ice" McMath who is known as one of the most well respected high school coaches in the nation.
McMath also coordinated the scouting, film break down, and ran the social media outlets for the Lumberjacks as well as been involved with academic success.
Coach McMath will serve as the recruiting coordinator for the Pioneers, as well as be involved in all aspects of day to day operations including-player development, film editing, film exchange, and on the floor coaching.
McMath also coached AAU basketball for Lamar Woodley's Saginaw Underdawgs AAU Travel Team Directed by Zeek Thomas. McMath coached Division I prospect Cameron Morse (Youngstown St.). McMath also coached Denzal Watts (University Alabama Birhmingham) while coaching for Team Detroit Travel Program.
Josh Southern- Coach Joshua Southern enters his first season with Delta College from an outstanding NCAA Division 1 playing career at Boston College. At Boston College Southern was a 4 year letter winner for BC and was drafted by the Texas Legends in the 2011 NBA Development League Draft.
Coach Southern will be involved with all aspects of post player development, on the floor coaching, recruiting and film breakdown for the Pioneers.
Southern's Stats at Boston College:
SENIOR-
Averaged 6.6 points and 3.8 rebounds with a FG percentage of .582. Shot .720 percent from the free throw line. Played every game of the season.
JUNIOR-
Played in all 31 games, making 25 starts; averaged 16.4 minutes per game.
Averaged 4.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game; averaged 2.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in league contests.
SOPHOMORE-
Played in and started all 34 games; averaged 22.7 minutes per game.
Shared the program's Coaches Award with teammate Tyler Roche.
Averaged 6.0 points and 5.1 rebounds per game; averaged 5.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in league contests.
Shot a team-high 50.3 perent from the field.
FRESHMAN-
Played in 20 games; averaged 14.9 minutes per game.
Averaged 5.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game; averaged 7.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game in league contests.
Southern was also a standout gradute of Saginaw High School where he received MaxPreps All-America honors as a senior. Earned 2006-07 All-State Class A first-team honors from the Detroit News; also captured All-Saginaw Valley League accolades. Averaged 16.3 points, 15.4 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.4 blocked shots per game in 2006-07. Led Saginaw to a 25-1 record and the Class A state title in 2006-07; tallied 15 points and 15 rebounds in the championship-game win over Detroit Redford in Michigan's State Breslin Center (March 24, 2007).
Coach Southern has also spent time on the Saginaw High School's coaching staff alongside head coach Julian Taylor in the 2012-13 season.
Chuck Lord- Coach Lord is no stranger to Pioneer basketball. As he enters his 40th year as part of Delta College, Coach Lord has worn many different hats including- Assistant men's basketball coach, head golf coach, head women's basketball coach, assistant athletic director, and athletic director.
Caleb McIntosh- Coach McIntosh will be involved in day to day operations of the program as a student assistant. McIntosh played for the Pioneers last season averaging 13.5 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, and 3.6 assists per game. Coach McIntosh is a high school graduate of Athens High School.
Jesse Torres- Coach Torres will be entering his first season as strength and conditioning coach for the Pioneers. Torres has been a certified athletic trainer for the past five years. He has worked with Swan Valley High School and Birch Run High School programs. Coach Torres also has gained lots of experience in personal training. Torres also had the opportunity to work with the Detroit Tigers in an athletic training internship for the 2009 season.
Coach Torres responsibilities will include strength workouts, conditioning workouts, injury prevention, and injury rehabilitation for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers will finish up Fall strength and conditioning September 30th, with official practice starting on October 1st.
