Julian Henderson (Saginaw/Saginaw, MI) had one of the best all around games of the season in a 66-57 win over Wayne County Community College District (WCCC). Henderson finished the game with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assist to help lead the Pioneers to their second conference victory.
The Pioneers came into the game after two conference losses to Macomb and Alpena focused on righting the ship. From the opening tip of the ball you could tell that the Pioneers wanted this game with their defensive effort early in the game. The hustle plays were all going the Pioneers way with a couple loose balls that lead to a pair of three pointers by Jaylen Randle (Flint Carman-Ainsworth/Flint ,MI)11 points, 6 rebounds and Benjamin Batts 12 points, 6 steals(Arthur Hill/Saginaw, MI) to give the Pioneers a seven point lead. The first half was a defensive struggle by both teams, which was evident by the halftime score of 37-26 Pioneers.
As has been the case with the Pioneers the beginning of the second half was not as energetic as the first and it showed with WCC coming back and tying the game with 10 minutes to go in the game. Everything that went right in the first half was going wrong in the second half for the Pioneers. The Pioneers fought back lead by an overall team effort defensively and some crucial three pointers by Henderson. The Pioneers who struggled early in the game at the Free throw line, the Pioneers closed the game out shooting 5-5 from the line to gain the 66-57 win.
The Pioneers had four players in double figures including Markell Bradshaw (Saginaw/Saginaw, MI) who had 18 points, 6 assist, and 4 rebounds. The Pioneers fought back through similar situations of the past two games but this game you saw growth in the team.
The Pioneers travel to Oakland Community College Saturday January 17, 2015 at 3pm.
