First Match Jitters Leave the Pioneers Room to Improve
Delta Freshmen get their feet wet with their first Tournament experience.
A team that primarily dominated by freshmen is going to have a learning curve to adjust to when they begin playing at a higher level, and that is exactly what happened for the Pioneers. With six of the seven members of the team playing in their first Collegiate Tournament, the scores, especially on the front nine, were higher than anticipated.
"They didn't play up to their own expectations or shoot near the scores they have been putting up in practices," Head coach Kyle Middleton said after the match. "Nerves had something to do with that for most of them. The first few holes were rough for several of them."
Guy Beaudet led the team on Friday with an 82 for his round followed closely by Nick Brewer, who shot an 83. For the tournament, Delta went on to finish ninth out of the 11 schools. This will leave the Pioneers with room to improve moving forward, but will allow them to get the first match nerves under their belt.
"After playing a few holes the nerves settled and they started playing much better," Middleton stated. "I anticipate much better scores on this upcoming Friday now that they each have a match under their belt."
Up next, Delta will play in the Sam Kromer Invitational at the Port Huron Elks Golf Club on September 15.
