Event has raised over $63,000 in six years
University Center, Michigan- On April 10th, the Delta College Athletic program sponsored and hosted the Hoops for Homeless event helping to raise almost $10,000 in the process.
Hoops for Homeless benefits the rescue mission of Bay City and Saginaw as the Nouvel Catholic Central and Bay City All Saints students team up with other current students, alumni and faculty at their respective schools to have a little basketball game.
Except this isn't an ordinary game. With additional points being awarded for granny shot makes and half-court prayers, the score often exceeds well over 200 points per team. In this year's game, the sixth straight year Delta has hosted the event, Bay City All-Saints came out victorious.
But the real winners are the 158 men, women, and children that the ministry serves each night.
"I am proud of the relationship Delta College Athletics has built between the Rescue Ministries of Mid-Michigan in Bay City and Saginaw," states Delta College Athletic Director Shelly Raube. "We are able to give back to a great cause in our community, supporting those who struggle to find a place to sleep, or put clothes on their back, or just to have a hot meal."
"Events such as the Hoops for Homeless is important for young student-athletes to be involved in. This gives them an experience to understand what is happening within the community and to try and make a positive change."
In six years of running the event, $63,700 has been raised.

"We appreciate the hearts and generosity of All Saints and Nouvel High school students, faculty, parents and alumni who help us in various ways to meet the needs of those who come to us," she said.
"We couldn't do this without Shelly Raube and the use of the Pioneer Gym and all that Delta provides for us. We really appreciate them."
