Red Hawks Fight Hard, Fall to Delta 2-0
Lake Michigan Defense Slows Delta Down, But Not Enough to get the Win
All around campus, Wednesday was a day that faculty and students were all wearing pins, stickers or tattoos shown in the picture for the article, supporting those who are struggling with addiction. Us at Delta support those struggling with addiction and if you need help please call SAMHSA at 800-622-HELP.
Growing up, we were told not to judge a book by its cover, and that lesson is something that Delta saw on Wednesday afternoon. Lake Michigan came in with a record that included zero wins, but a majority of losses have come in tight contests, like this one. They have a very talented back line and goal keeper, and the Lady Pioneers would find it tough to get the ball into the back of the net.
The defense for the Red Hawks did a great job of stopping the runs that Delta would put together and they held them scoreless for the bulk of the first half. With 10 minutes remaining in the half, Nicole Hill sent a beautiful ball to the front of the net, towards the far post. Taylor Farrand would find the ball off a bounce and put it into the back of the net to give Delta the 1-0 advantage. This would give them some momentum going into the half.
The second half was almost a mirror image of the first half, as Delta would once again mount scoring opportunities against Lake Michigan and continue to be turned away by their talented back line defenders. In the seventy-fifth minute, Delaney Gravlin sent a great through ball to Skylar Eckert, who got one on one with the keeper and scored the goal, providing the Lady Pioneers with a late insurance goal with only 15 minutes to play. Delta continued to maintain the possession advantage for the remaining minutes and the final score ended up being 2-0 in favor of Delta, who picked up another key conference win.
"I felt that we did not have the intensity or execution that we had experienced in some of our more recent games," Head Coach Paul Stenglein said after the win. "Any win is great right now, and we will use this as a learning experience as we prepare for our last three games of the regular season."
Next up for Delta they will travel to Alma to take on the Scots on October, 6.
