Port Huron, MI – The Pioneers hit the road on Thursday as they finished their four game series against MCCAA foe St. Clair County Community College at Sanborn Park in Port Huron. The two teams split their double-header at Wickes Park with the Skippers winning game one, 2-1 while Delta took the nightcap, 6-1.
The home team jumped on the board in the bottom of the first off of Delta starting pitcher Drew Schultz as a walk, a wild pitch a stolen base and an error led to the first run of the game while two more singles gave the Skippers a quick 3-0 lead. It remained that way until the Pioneers pushed a run across in the fifth as pinch runner Matt Fisher scored on a Aaron Esparza fly ball to make it 3-1.
St Clair came right back in the bottom of the inning, however, scoring two more runs on four hits for the final score, 5-1. Schultz took the loss to drop his record to 2-3 on the season. Zach Schirmer led the anemic Delta offense with a double and a stolen base.
St. Clair once again scored first in game two as a three-run homerun off starting DC pitcher Jake Wright gave them a 4-0 lead that they would never relinquish. Delta would cut in to the lead in the top of the third as Esparza and Mitch Morley each had RBI's to make it 4-2 but St. Clair would hit a two-run and solo homerun in the fifth to put it out of reach and win by the final of 8-4.
Wright took the loss to drop his season record to 2-1 while Cam Fowler led the offense after going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The losses bring Delta's record to 8-11 on the season and 2-4 in conference play. St. Clair, meanwhile, improves their overall record to 4-15 and 4-4 in league play. The Pioneers will play tomorrow at Henry Ford Community College in Taylor in a 2pm double-header contest.
