Wickes Park, Saginaw Twp – Drew Schultz threw a no-hitter on Friday as Delta won game one of their four game series against Henry Ford by the score of 8-0. They would go on to sweep the day by winning game two, 3-2. Their overall record now stands at 9-14 while their MCCAA East record improves to 4-6.
Schultz was almost untouchable in the effort, striking out 13 Hawk batters while walking just two – one of which he then proceeded to pick off of first base. He faced just 22 hitters in the effort – one over the number of hitters in a seven inning game – in upping his record to 3-1 on the season. He now has 59 strikeouts in 40.1 innings pitched.
Delta took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Nolan Raymond tripled and scored on a wild pitch. They would score six more in the fifth inning and one in the sixth for the final 8-0 tally. Cam Fowler, Cam Floyt and Matt Fisher each had a double and a single while Nick Johnson and Evan Pocius picked up a pair of hits as well.
In game two, Henry Ford jumped out to a 2-0 lead against starting Delta pitcher Joe Tany. Delta would get one back in the bottom of the fifth as Evan "Pokey" Pocius led off with a walk and was bunted to second by Braeden Lamberg. Cam Fowler laced a single to right-center to score Pocius and cut the Hawk lead in half at 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, with the score still 2-1 in favor of the visitors, Nick Johnson hit a leadoff single and came to third on a misplayed sacrifice bunt by Randy Rangle. With runners at second and third and one out, Drew Long hit a long double to right field that scored two and gave DC a 3-2 lead heading in to the seventh inning.
Tany got a ground out and a fly to start the seventh but a single and an error put two runners on. A slow roller to Cam Floyd at third base ended the threat, however, as the freshman from Pinconning threw across the infield on the run and got the batter by a step to preserve the win.
Fowler and Johnson each had two singles to lead the offense while Drew Long had a single to go along with his game winning, two RBI double. Tany got his first win of the year on the hill, throwing a complete game while surrendering one unearned run on three hits with six K's.
The Pioneers will finish their four-game series with Henry Ford tomorrow at Papp Park in Taylor, Michigan. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
