Carlos McMath Named Coach of the Year
After a record breaking year, Carlos McMath was named BCAM and NJCAA District 10 Coach of the Year
Entering his third year at the helm of the Delta College Men's Program, Carlos McMath had improved the Delta Men's Win-Loss Record in each of his prior two seasons, and looked to continue that trend. Delta was returning a solid core of sophomore players with a good group of incoming freshmen as well and that propelled them to an impressive 10-0 start to the season.
After the great start, Delta struggled their way through the middle of the schedule going 5-6 to drop their record to 15-6. But McMath and the squad stayed strong, and rebounded to win their way to the second ever National Tournament Appearance for the College. To get there, Delta defeated the Ocelots from Schoolcraft 73-66 in the District 10 Championship Game, earning McMath the NJCAA District 10 Coach of the Year Award and Guard Martel Handley the MVP Award.
Entering Nationals with a 21-6 record and the number 11 seed, the Pioneers proceeded to win the first two games which put them into the final four. They ultimately took fourth in the country after close losses in their final two games ending their successful season at 23-8.
After the National Tournament, McMath earned another Coach of the Year honor this one from BCAM (Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan).
"Being named coach of the year is for our team this season validation and vindication for me for where my coaching career began," Carlos McMath said after finding out he won. "But all the credit should go to my great assistant coaches, Marshall Gray, Charles Lord and Greg McMath who put a lot of work in this year helping me out and this wouldn't be possible without them," McMath added. "It's also a tribute to our players and how great they were this year at making me look good."
Currently McMath is working on finalizing the roster and schedule for the 2018-19 season as they look to repeat as Division 10 Champions and earn their way back to the National Tournament.
